Not only did Real World/Real World-Road Rules Challenge alumni Coral Smith finally come out in a recent interview with Outlook Magazine, she proved that she’s “capable of doing shit”, and really, really smart.
What is your sexual orientation? You dated men on Real World.
Oh, yeah. It’s very cloudy at this point in time. I’m definitely venturing toward my lesbian qualities. It’s been a long time coming. At that time, I was really unsure. That was not the proper venue, the proper platform. To come out to your parents on a fucking reality show, I think that’s just mean, so I didn’t.
Your girlfriend is very beautiful.
She’s not my girlfriend. I’m attracted to beautiful women. Beautiful women tend to be attracted to me. It really seems to work out for me.
You’re coming out more, doing LGBT events?
I’ve always been really supportive of the community. I just felt it was something I belonged to and had to show up for. I love doing this kind of thing. It’s really positive and shows we’re capable and can run shit. Gay men run shit in L.A., honey. If you want to go out with somebody in L.A., they have businesses and money and depth. Gay men are coming up and are very underestimated.
Do you feel a sense of responsibility now that you’re coming out?
I guess I get a little nervous. Just saying it is a little . . . It’s a little surreal. I’m not scared. I walk around holding hands. It’s not a problem for me, but I do fear backlash to some degree. Everyone has something negative to say, and I don’t really want to deal with it. Other than that, I don’t care. Hell, I’m old. I’m 28!
South of Nowhere, Episode 303 "The It Girls" - Airdate 08/17/07
I was going to write a reacap of last week’s episode but, quite frankly, I’m tired and a little hung over – and there was no Spashly action in this episode, so what’s the point? Instead, feast your eyes on AfterEllen’s Karman Kregloe, Jill Bennett and Dara Nai discussing it. It’s a little long, but even if you’re not interested in the show you’ll be captivated by the way Jill eats strawberries.
I had the pleasure of sharing a moment with Lisa Marie Presley in New York a few years ago, and after I recovered from her staggering beauty, I was touched by her kindness and poise. I never fully understood the fascination with Elvis but at that moment it all became clear.
It’s a well known fact that Elvis was a giver. Not only did I grow up on his music, I also grew up with a serious Elvis fan for a mother who often recounted stories of his generosity. Uh, anyone remember that 80’s movie Touched by Love? I think she burned that film into my psyche. I’ll also never forget that August day in 1977 when Elvis died because my mother - like millions of others around the world - was completely inconsolable.
Although it would have been easy for Presley to ride on her father’s celebrity status, she carved her own way. Her 2003 debut album, To Whom It May Concern, reached #5 on the Billboard 200 albums chart. Her second album Now What,
released in 2005, reached #9 on the Billboard 200. Both albums as of today have been certified Platinum. Her give-a-shit attitude resonated with fans, and her smoky voice established her credibility in the music industry. She is Lisa Marie Fucking Presley after all, and she’s proved that she has nothing to prove.
Not only is Presley following in her father’s footsteps artistically, she’s also doing it charitably. To commemorate the 30th anniversary of Elvis’s death on August 16th, Lisa Marie recorded a duet with him for the Elvis celebrations taking place in Memphis. Her vocals were added to his 1969 recording of “In the Ghetto”, and the video and song were made available on iTunes with all proceeds going toward Presley Place in New Orleans - a transitional housing program she started in Memphis.
“I wanted to do this and use it for something good,” Presley said in an interview with Spinner.com. “All fingers pointed towards New Orleans. I landed there to do the video and I looked around when I got off the plane, and it looks like Katrinahappened six months ago. That's when it all fell together. And all proceeds - not a portion of - all proceeds are going towards building a transitional housing building in New Orleans.”
Watch the duet video here:
“I could've done this ages ago, Presley said. “I always find it necessary to make my own path and not ride on [my father’s] coattails, which I have not done. And the only reason I was OK with doing this is because I've already done a couple of records. People already know who I am on my own. I'm not doing this in a self-centered way. I'm doing this for a bigger cause.”
Her dad would be proud. I know my mom is.

South of Nowhere, episode 301"The Valley of the Shadows"- Airdate 08/10/07
After a long hiatus, the South of Nowhere Season 3 opener takes up after the King High prom shooting.
Here’s where we stand:
Clay is dead. Yep, he’s a casualty of limited handgun control. And his Stepford parents and siblings are all smiles only three months later. It must be because he was the adopted one. Plus, his knocked-up girlfriend decided to keep his baby even though she’s full of hate and resentment that the kid is going to keep her from studying art abroad.
Glen joined the Army to be all that he could be – which has to be something other than a greasy video game addict with a bum knee. But alas, he couldn’t even do that right. The jackass enlisted with a fake ID and since he was only 17 when he did it, his daddy made sure to get him off the hook. A lesson from GWB perhaps?
Aiden grew his hair out. It’s about as boring as he is. And Madison perfected her cheer moves so that the superficial cheer squad would ask her back. When they did, she rejected them. Always in control that one.
Spencer rejected Ashley’s pleas for a reconciliation, but only after a steamy make out session proving that those rumors about The N de-gaying SON could be false - and that Spencer wanted some action.
As for Ashley, she must have gotten trampled in the prom melee and suffered a traumatic brain injury. To ease the pain of her recent breakup, Ashley slept with Aiden. Not once, but twice. Then she had the audacity to tell Spencer that she’ll never stop trying to win her back – and even went as far as calling her on the phone to tell her how much she missed her while Aiden slept next to her. But she and Kyla did however get a 25 million dollar inheritance from their father, so that could pay for some serious rehabilitation therapy.
Catch the new season of South of Nowhere at its new time, Fridays at 10:00 pm ET on The N.
Melissa Etheridge is set to release her new album, The Awakening, on Sept. 25. In a press release issued by Island Records, Melissa says: "The album is my story and my journey. I hope that it will ring universally. I began to retrace the path of my own American dream: from my early years in California in the '80s, to my dream for fame and fortune and my sad realization of the false images that lead so many of us into misery.”
While the album’s first single, "Message to Myself," (watch here) is a bit syrupy, we can rejoice in the fact that hidden in the YouTube treasure trove is one of Etheridge’s spicier performances - her MTV Unplugged duet with Jewel.
After a bout of testosterone overload, Miami Ink’s, Kat Von D heads home a new shop and a new show in Los Angeles.
LA Ink, airing Tuesday’s at 10:00 PM, profiles Von D, and her crew of punk pinup girls as they party, play and work in LA. No doubt Von D was the draw to the Miami show for many lesbo’s. I mean, who doesn’t love a chick with the moxie to tattoo stars on her face as a tribute the Motley Crüe song "Starry Eyes"? Now that she’s on her home turf, there’s no telling what she’ll do.
Back in the day before TiVo, webisodes and YouTube, before mid-season replacements and summer series, we had to wait until fall for our favorite shows to come on. It’s a good thing those days are over.
Catch the new season of South of Nowhere, beginning with the 1 hour premier Friday, August 10th at 8:00 pm ET on the N, and Weeds,Monday, August 13 at 10:00 pm ET on Showtime. Check back weekly for Cyn’s Commentary on each episode.

Nothing says fall like festivals. No, not the church ones where you play drunken bingo with the nuns and priests, (those are fun too, albeit for entirely different reasons) but the ones where great art, music and food is celebrated.
The TriArts Festival is coming, September 8 and 9, to Historic Downtown San Pedro. The presented artworks, dance, music and theater pieces will showcase the changing face of San Pedro as an art, entertainment and cultural center.

If you need a reason to fall for Kyra Sedgewick other than her pillowy smile and quiet confidence, how about her sexy, southern portrayal of flawed Deputy Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson on The Closer? If that’s not enough, here’s another one for you; she loves the ladies. Well, sort of.
On her recent Inside the Actor's Studio appearance, Sedgewick was loose-lipped about her fondness for kissing girls (see Losing Chase). And in the current issue of The Advocate, she talks about her best lesbian friend as well as the female celebrities she'd most like to hook up with on-screen, including Salma Hayek. She says, “That would be really hot."
I have to concur. Watch The Closer, Mondays at 10:00 PM EST on TNT.
The third season of South of Nowhereis just around the corner, and I’m preparing to enter rehab ala Lindsey Lohan to cure myself of the addiction. Enjoying those girls just seems wrong on so many levels. I want to stop watching, but I’m wise enough to know that it’s impossible without some sort of intervention.
Who was killed in the King High prom melee? Will Ashley (Mandy Musgrave) choose to be with gal-pal Spencer (Gabrielle Christian) or go running back to Straightville with Aiden (Matt Cohen)? Will Glen (Chris Hunter) come down from his narcotics high long enough to realize how hot Madison (Valery Ortiz) is? Will Paula (Maeve Quinlan) finally hang herself with rosary beads?
No matter what it says about me, I can’t wait to find out. Watch the
Season 3 promo here. New episodes air Friday, August 10 at 8:00 PM EST on The N.
In The L Word casting news, Malaya Rivera Drew (ER) has signed on to play Jenny Schecter’s (Mia Kirshner) personal assistant when Season 5 returns next year. You know; she’ll proofread Jenny’s manuscripts, curtail her dog euthanizing escapades, stop her from accessorizing with a tiara, administer her medications and do some light filing.
The D-List diva is back and better than ever. Now that she’s ditched her husband, Kathy Griffin is on a mission to only date men who will help her gain publicity – like Backstreet Boy, Nick Carter – while traipsing the country with her entourage: new tour manager and roommate, Tom; loyal assistant Jessica; and assistant to the assistant, Tiffany.
Almost funnier than Kathy’s shocking pussy jokes, jabs at celebrities, intoxicated parents and posse of gay friends, is her ability to shed light on the nonsense that is showbiz.
Watch Kathy Griffin: My life on the D-List, Tuesdays at 10:00 EST on Bravo.

Although Rosie O’Donnell made an early departure from The View due to a split screen fiasco and an ill-fated friendship, she’s far from taking time off. She’ll hit the road with Cyndi Lauper'sTrue Colorstour this month, and will soon release a book, Celebrity Detox, about her struggles with fame. A new talk show could also be on the horizon as early as this fall. Stay tuned.
A two-disc vintage collection of Desert Hearts will be released on June 5, containing never-before-seen footage of one of the best lesbian love scenes ever captured on film, new commentary by director Donna Deitch, and interviews with Deitch and stars Helen Shaver and Patricia Charbonneau.
After a successful career in television, Deitch is said to be focusing on her personal goals, beginning with making a sequel to this timeless lesbian classic.
Her partner, writer Terri Jenz, has plans to adapt her award-winning memoir Strange Piece of Paradise into a movie which Deitch is also slated to direct.
Read Deitch’s interview with Hillgirlz, and see candid shots from the making of Desert Hearts.
Remember that old adage “Boys don’t make passes at girls who wear glasses”? Well clearly those boys didn’t know what they were missing – not that we would have cared if they did.
If you’re a brainiac looking for a chance to meet like-minded individuals, then book group expo is probably just the thing to get your pages turning.
On June 9 and 10, this one-of-a-kind event in San Jose, California will bring together those with a passion for all things literary. Here, readers can network; mingle; discuss books; enjoy great wine, food and conversation; and meet their favorite authors. Boys; you’re welcome too. Just steer clear of the “four-eyes” jokes.
Openly gay author Terri Jentz will be on hand to discuss her powerful memoir Strange Piece of Paradise; a captivating account of her efforts to solve her own almost-murder, as well as the mystery of herself.
Event founder Ann Kent is in the running for a Royal Schmoozer award, so help her out by throwing a vote her way. Your efforts propelled my gay ex-boyfriend to Genre magazine’s Man of the Year, so let’s see if we can go two for two. 6/15/07 – Note: She claimed the title. Your voice really does make a difference!
That’s it for now. Until next time, keep the CeleGAYtion going!
From Rosie, to Work Out’s Jackie Warner, to the beautiful straight women playing gay on TV, one would think that lesbians have quite a variety of shows to choose from these days. But with All My Children ending their lesbian-transgender love story, South of Nowhere rumored to be watering down their teen lesbian storyline and The L Wordon hiatus, there’s not much but realty shows to keep us entertained.
Let’s start with the Jackie/Rebecca relationship on Bravo’s Work Out.That’s right. Jackie Warner, owner of Sky Sport and Spa in Beverly Hills, has traded in her childish, bratty ex-girlfriend Mimi (who left a lasting impression last season for her biting habit and drink-hurling ability) for her childish, bratty employee Rebecca, who too can throw a good libation. Although it may not seem like it, Jackie did trade up because Rebecca is totally H-O-T. But she’s also straight, not to mention an attention grabber, so there’s really nowhere for this to go but downhill. It’s fun to watch nevertheless – and for some reason, I am rooting for them.
Those of you with a keen eye for coiffed eyebrows may have noticed a cameo appearance by Carole and Nikki at Jackie’s pajama party – you know, those two lesbos featured on Oprah in an episode about formerly straight women who realized they were gay only after they were married to men? (Maybe they were there to give Rebecca advice!) Well if you’re not familiar with them now, you probably soon will be because they've started a media management company and are shopping some kind of show about something…
What else, what else?
Hey, have you heard that Rosie O'Donnell is leaving The View when her contract expires in June? That news is only EVERYWHERE these days. The media keeps harping on how controversial Rosie’s time on the talk-fest has been but let’s face it; she’s simply giving her view. No matter how loud she says what she says, it is what Barbara Walters brought her on to do, and since the ratings are up she’s obviously doing it well. Let’s not forget that Rosie single-handedly brought real gay issues into the homes of Middle America. Just last week, openly gay comedian Judy Gold served as The View’s guest co-host and discussed with Rosie how she and her ex told their children they were breaking up. Conversations that would never have taken place on live TV a year ago are now just normal morning coffee chats.
Of course, Rosie’s been bashed by every news media outlet for her outspoken observations. Instead of slamming her opinions though, they’ve mostly taken pot-shots at her weight, gender, sexuality and family. If she were a white, balding billionaire, Rosie would be hailed as a genius and offered fistfuls of money to extend her contract. Instead, ABC is foolishly letting her walk away.
I’m hearing talk that Rosanne Barr has thrown her hat into the ring as a potential Rosie replacement - which would certainly keep things interesting - but my guess is the network is going to be very, very careful.
If you’re sick of reality, you’re out of luck because scripted television shows rarely depict gays and lesbians as well-rounded characters. But it IS sweeps week again and any subject concerning gays seems to send ratings through the roof so who knows what we’ll get. As I’ve said in the past, Americans hate gays and lesbians who want equal rights, want to get married or want to adopt, but love to see lesbians in porn videos, gay men giving straight men makeovers and straight women playing lesbians on TV.
Speaking of women who are not really lesbians but play them on screen; here’s a list of my favorites:
Elizabeth Mitchell
Although Lost’s twisting plotlines and extravagant tales are enjoyable on their own, watching Elizabeth Mitchell (Juliet) sweetly seduce her way into the survivors’ camp stirs up memories of watching her sweetly being seduced by Angelina Jolie in Gia.
Carla Gugino
This lovely lady is currently staring as sexy Hollywood agent Amanda on Entourage, but she’ll soon be bedding Lucy Liu (Kill Bill, Charlie's Angels) in the upcoming vampire movie Rise: Blood Hunter. After that nasty lesbian-rape scene in Jaded, she’s due for some major affection.
Kate Walsh
Remember when Walsh played Drew Carey’s compulsive-eater girlfriend on The Drew Carey Show? Yes, that was before she played Sandra Oh’s (Grey’s Anatomy’s Christina) lover in the movie Under the Tuscan Sun. Now she’s on her way to a Grey’s Anatomyspin-off where she’ll play an OBGYN at a fertility/wellness clinic. There’s a good chance of a Sapphic storyline here since those places ARE basically lesbian pickup joints.
Annabella Sciorra
Maybe we’ll see more of this firecracker as The L Word’s driven Kate Arden, but if not; here’s to hoping she’s miraculously cured of the ovarian cancer plaguing her on ER so she call fall madly in love with Sam (Linda Cardellini), her overly-involved nurse.
That’s it for now. Until next week, keep the CeleGAYtion going.
Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on you again, bitch. Bianca, (Eden Riegel) Daytime television’s most confused (and only) lesbian, is leaving Pine Valley once more. Instead of jetting off to Paris with her lesbian lover as she did the last time she left home, Binx is heading to Indiana to support her transsexual lover, Zarf/Zoe, (Jeffrey Carlson) while he reconciles with his family. The rating stunt is over, no GLADD awards were won, and the last scenes of the disastrous duo will air April 26. Click here for more details.
Star Magazine is claiming that Carmen Electra and Joan Jett are dating. An unnamed source tells the magazine they've been seeing each other since before Thanksgiving, shortly after Carmen starred in Joan's video for her song "A.C.D.C.” Carmen's rep is already denying the Star report, telling US Magazine, "They are just friends." Maybe Electra got confused and mistook Jett for her ex-husband, Dave Navarro. I can sort of see the resemblance.
CBS has ordered a pilot for a half-hour comedy called The Rich Inner Life of Penelope Cloud. The sitcom follows former literary star, Penelope, (Marisa Tomei) who has an epiphany and opts to pursue optimism rather than cynicism. Penelope's housemate and ex-girlfriend, Eva (Lost’s Cynthia Waltros) is said to be a choreographer with a weakness for wine, cigarettes, and beautiful young women. Although the character of Penelope is mostly straight and only had a one-time fling with a woman, anything Marisa Tomei does gets a yes vote in my book – even her role as the chatty roommate to Denise Huxtable (Lisa Bonet) on the Cosby Show spin-off, A Different World.
Cyndi Lauper will be hitting the road this summer for a national True Colors tour to benefit various LGBT organizations. Get the details at truecolorstour.com.
If last year’s Academy Awards show was a celebration of homo-erotic cowboys, then the 79th annual Academy Awards was all about the lesbians. Ellen DeGeneres made Hollywood history by becoming the first openly gay entertainer to host the Oscar show, but she wasn’t the only Sapphic sister getting attention. Rocker Melissa Ethridge picked up an award for best original song, and shared a congratulatory kiss with her partner – on camera!
Click here for a complete list of Oscar winners, photos and interviews.
Check out the recent Planet Out.com interview where Belinda Carlisle dishes on her lesbian fans, her flings with girls, her son’s obsession with Nancy Pelosi and being asked to replace Paula Abdul as a judge on American Idol.
The Peach Pit Meets the Meatpacking District - 2/5/07
Darren Star, creator of Beverly Hills 9020 and Sex and the City, is working on a new series for ABC called Cashmere Mafia, about four successful female executives, friends since college, who rely on one another as they juggle the demands of career, family and ambitions in New York. One of the four women, Caitlin, falls for a woman she hires, and the two share a kiss in the pilot.
But just when things start to get interesting, the new hire cheats on Caitlin with a French woman named Cecelia. And Caitlin, ever so hurt and forlorn, beings to date a lesbian trapped in a man’s body. Oh….wait, I’m mixing up my ABC shows.
We'll find out in May if ABC picks up the series and if the lesbian relationship will actually last.
If you long for the days when Bianca (Eden Riegel) and Maggie (Elizabeth Hendrickson) were on the verge of romance - before rock stars and serial killers - you’ll love this soapy website.
Oprah and Gail were the first celebrity non-practicing lesbians, soon followed by the Spanish equivalent, Salma and Penelope. Now, Courtney Cox and Jennifer Aniston are taking a dip in the dyke pool – on television anyway. Aniston is slated to guest-star on Cox’s FX show Dirt, playing a rival tabloid editor – and lesbian – who plants one on Cox’s character.
It’s almost time for Joe Fitrzyk to relinquish his Genre Man of the Year title. With your help, he’ll be passing the throne to his partner, Clark Felgner.
Help keep Detroit on the map for something other than gunshot wounds and unemployment rates by throwing Clark a 10 vote once a day until March 1st.
Look out Oprah and Gail. Last week on Late Night With David Letterman, Penelope Cruz addressed the circulating rumors that she and Salma Hayek are more than friends saying, "I'm sorry to say, that is not the case!"
According to Penelope, the rumors got started when she playfully grabbed Salma's butt in front of photographers while promoting their film Banditas. Buy it now!
A new year typically means a fresh start, even for TV lesbians. All My Children’s resident fem Bianca (Eden Riegel) returned to Pine Valley with only a tail between her legs because her best-friend-turned-lover, Maggie, (Elizabeth Hendrickson) cheated on her with some grungy French chick. (Look for Maggie’s return on January 15.)
So what’s a naive lesbo to do? How about fall for a transsexual rock star named Zarf(Jeffrey Carlson) who claims he’s a she – and a lesbian to boot. I’m all for taking the road less traveled, but this time I’m ready to hail a cab and get the hell out of this disaster. This storyline could prove to be too much too soon. Dwellers of the red states (and the diehard dykes who want to see Binx with an actual woman) can only take so much.
So while AMC’s head writer Megan McTavish rifles through her hate mail and ascertains the situation, we get Bianca yo-yoing back and forth with unexplained feelings for Zarf, yet crying hurt and betrayal like only a Kane woman can.
The good news is, in the midst of her turmoil the voluptuous little vixen is finally letting her hair down. On New Year’s Eve at the ConFusion party, the usually wholesome lesbohemian picked up a random girl, engaged in a heated lip-lock and invited said friend back to her place to ring in the New Year with a bang - which is the most action Binx has seen since her conception. (Tangent: Talk about multitasking; when the hell did Bianca have time to make friends? For the last six years she’s been coming out of the closet, romancing a con, cajoling Maggie, getting raped, having a kid, searing for it, taking over a company and moving to Europe. Now she’s back on the scene talking about the “old gang”??)
Will les-Bianca reign supreme or will Bi-anca fall for Zarf’s “wounded bird” routine? I guess that all depends on how much the viewers can tolerate.

Over on South of Nowhere, the season finale found Spencer (Gabriel Christian) and Ashley (Mandy Musgrave) on the verge of a breakup – big shock. It seems that man candy Aiden (Matt Cohen) still has the hots for Ash – the almost-momma of his miscarried child - and who could blame him. The question is; who does Ashley want keeping her warm? In light of a random shootout at King High which leaves the survival of the friends in question, her decision may not be a difficult one to make.
Alison Smith’s close-knit Catholic family is the picture of bliss, until her 18-year-old brother is killed in a car accident. The grief of that moment is the catalyst for all that follows, including a communication barrier with her parents, a sweetly scandalous lesbian affair and a battle with anorexia. Even if you’re not into Catholic girls, this coming-of-age memoir will have you chanting their praises like a religious incantation.
